A Thousand Blows / Light Creative / Disney
Title sequence photography and compositing
For the title sequence of A Thousand Blows, we were commissioned by the brilliant people at Light Creative to step back in time. Photographing the cast, we created portraits of their characters that we embedded into original photographs of Victorian London.
To ensure authenticity, we visited the locations of the archival photographs. We used the few landmarks and buildings that remain today to map the original camera positions. Working backwards from the camera technology that would have been available to the Victorian photographer and considering the developments in human proportions, we painstakingly matched the perspective, scale and composition so that the portraits sat naturally within each archival photograph.
The results are seamless, but behind the scenes it took extensive research and pre-visualisation to bring the imagery to life in a way that, we hope, feels hauntingly real.
